I’m not sure where most of my readers live but this week has shown to be one of the most beautiful weeks here in NW Indiana.  It is the magical kind of weather where it is cool enough to wear a sweatshirt but warm enough to toss on shorts.  It is sunny enough that you might want to toss on a hat so you don’t freckle but it isn’t so bright that you can’t see the blooming flowers in front of you.  It is kind of spring I expected a couple months ago not at the beginning of June. It makes me happy. The onlyRead More →

Comfort food.  We all have our own favorites.  The things that make us smile and fulfill our souls when we are the emptiest.  The thought of these dishes can erase the worries of a hard day.  They warm us from the inside out and our life wouldn’t be the same without them. I think when you are married for a longer period of time, you become like a comfort food to your spouse.  It may not be the most romantic way to phrase it but there is nothing people like more than comfort food and there is no one I like more than my husband.Read More →

Cinnamon.  Ranch Dressing.  Cajun Seasoning.  Dill Weed.  Mayonnaise. Garlic. Don’t worry that isn’t a shopping list for today’s recipe, it was the answer to a question I asked some friends…” What is a guilty pleasure ingredient you abundantly add to a dish when you are eating alone?” For me, it is lemon pepper.  (You know the Lawry’s bottle with the yellow top in the pantry.)  It isn’t that I feel it is an authentic taste of fresh lemons and the bite of fresh cracked pepper…it is that particular mix that I like.  The flavor is kind of sour but then there is a mix ofRead More →

My favorite week of the year is finally here….it is time for Chicago Gourmet!!!!  For those of you who are new readers, Chicago Gourmet is an annual food event set in Millennium Park.  To call it a “food event” is an injustice, it is a weekend filled with celebrity chefs, cooking demonstrations, book signings, lots of wine/spirit tastings and, of course, there is the food from Chicago’s best restaurants.  (And yes, I’ll take plenty of notes for those of you who write asking for recommendations.) Every year I’ve gone, the event has gotten better and better and I can only imagine what they have plannedRead More →

Do you ever wonder what you truly mean to a person?  Are they really your friend or are they just being polite?  Do people really want to hear your opinion or are they just making their grocery list in their head while you are talking?  When someone says they love you do they mean it or is just how they say good bye? I’m an open book.  People know that I am pretty upfront with my feelings and I have no poker face.  If I care about you, you know it.  (Plus, I have these wrinkles on my forehead that are really a billboard ofRead More →

I have been cursing a lot of folks lately. Not is a voodoo kind of way. I just think of something I don’t like and say “Curse you..blank-ity…blank…blanks.” This morning I was cursing all the folks who were rejoicing in the 60-degree weather we had in January and February because today in NW Indiana it was cold and snowing. I would much rather have had this in the earlier months when I expected it than have it now when my internal clock and daylight savings says I’m approaching spring. The curse I bestowed on these people actually left my husband a bit speechless because IRead More →

Don’t look back….move forward. I can’t tell you how many times I have said that to others or myself. It is easy to look back and find mistakes. Looking back can sometimes make you lose focus on the now. Past mistakes are learning experiences that can only excel us into a better future. But then the other day I realized that my theory is good with the exception of some of my early recipes. I consider my early recipes good “starter” recipes for someone who was learning to cook. The other day I started to revisit some of my favorites and realized that there wereRead More →

I hope everyone enjoyed my Chicago Northwest Restaurant Week preview. I had debated on writing a Valentine’s Day blog in the mix of all of that but decided against it for one reason…..my Valentine’s Day was kind of awful this year. Now before I start getting the inquiries asking about the state of my marriage, we are more than fine. My husband is my heart and soul and I love him to bits. (I can hear all the single guys who read this saying “Dang it” and a few of the gals too…you know who you are…wink…wink.) My husband and I pretty much have Valentine’sRead More →

Wait for it. Wait for it. Wait for it. All good things come to those who wait? Is that true? Do you mind when you have to wait for something? Or do you do whatever is in your power to make things happen NOW? I’m a pretty patient person when it comes to waiting. I never mind waiting in a doctor’s office when he/she is running late. My thought is that someone must need the attention more than I do. I don’t mind waiting in lines at the grocery store because it gives me the time to read the headlines on all the gossip magazines.Read More →
