There are a lot of things I am going to remember about the winter of 2013/2014.  I, obviously, will remember the innate amount of snow.  (Thank you hubby for using your big, strong muscles to clear the driveway so nicely.)  I will remember the crazy cold days like this morning’s temperature of -15.  Brrrrr. But one of the things that I really think will stick in my mind is my discovery of kimchi.  (Um, Barb, you didn’t discover kimchi that has been around for centuries.) I think the word discovery can be used for pretty much anyone who stumbles on something new and interesting.  HereRead More →

Sisters.  They are interesting creatures.  For some people, they are their best friends.  For other people, they are your worst enemies. You are raised together and share similar experiences and yet your lives can seem like you have been raised on separate planets. Some sisters look alike their entire lives while others have only mere flashes of resemblance.  Mannerisms mimic each other like a mirror in front of your face and voice inflections are like favorite recordings you can never erase from your brain. Sisters play a part in some of the happiest moments of your life and are at times responsible for some ofRead More →

One of the fun things about writing Felt Like a Foodie is that I get offers to try things.  I read most offers but honestly don’t feel comfortable promoting products that I don’t already use.  (Okay but I will totally cave in if it is something like a vacation to a place with cool food!  My morals do have some gray areas…I’m not in denial.) So the other week I was asked by Red Gold to be part of their “Lasagna Party” and celebrate the versatility of this classic dish.  The challenge was to take their base recipe for Lasagna and elevate it to aRead More →

How many people are tired of me talking about the weather?  How many people are tired of EVERYONE talking about the weather?  It seems like in the Midwest that we all have tunnel vision during the first couple months of the year. In our defense, we don’t only talk about the snow.  We talk about being sick.  This has been a doozy of a year for everyone that I know.  I’ve heard about every ailment and flu that is out there. In all fairness, I don’t label my bugs.  (H1N1, Bird Flu, Cooties..all the same in my world.)  So last night when I was upRead More →

I never really understood the saying “like a kid in a candy store.”  I think it is because I don’t have a sweet tooth so being in a candy store isn’t that appealing to me.  (And I’m not a kid.) But if you said to me “it was like a foodie at a sushi bar,” I would totally get it after my experience yesterday. Within the last few weeks, I had been given the honor to participate in the upcoming “Foodies Show Heart” charity sushi roll contest at RA Sushi in Lombard, IL on February 9, 2014, 1-3 PM. The premise of the event isRead More →

Brrrrr!!!!  If you don’t live in the Midwest, I consider you lucky right now.  The last two days have been filled with incredible amounts of snow and wickedly low temperatures. It is so cold… cold is it…it is so cold that we are eating with plastic silverware so that our forks won’t stick to our tongues. Our area of NW Indiana is known for being part of the Snowbelt and we lived up to that name last night.  It has been bad enough that a state of emergency has been declared and we are being asked to stay off the roads.  (I couldn’t even seeRead More →

Happy New Year!!!  How did you celebrate?  Did you whoop it up with friends?  Or did you just stay home and drink two bottles of champagne on your own?  (You know who you are?) We don’t usually do much to celebrate the New Year.  We smooch at midnight (if I am awake) and talk about resolutions for the New Year.  (My husband never really makes resolutions because he is perfect and he will tell you that himself!) But as you know, I need goals otherwise I will sit on the couch all year watching DVD’s of ER while I eat wasabi flavored almonds.  (I stillRead More →
