It has happened…I have reached that age where high school reunions become important.  It isn’t like the first high school reunion where you go mostly to see who got fat and who has the hottest wife/husband.  You side eye the gal who was flat chested who now has a huge upper hemisphere and notice the guy who won’t take off that baseball cap. You inquire about family, jobs and kids and feel a mixture of joy and jealousy.  (That reads pretty horrible but it is kind of true.) As you get older and mature, reunions get a little different.  You don’t go into with pettiness, youRead More →

July means only one thing in Indiana….FAIR TIME!!  Counties all over the state are gathering their best tractors, animals and 4-H projects to showcase everything that living in the heartland encompasses and dreaming of blue ribbons. The hard work of all of these animal owners and their dedication of trying to be the best in their class is amazing. The pigs are polished. The cows are cuddled.  The bunnies are buffed.  The horses are hugged.  The children are clapping.  The pies are primed.  The canned goods are cooked.  The quilts are queued up on the wall.  And the snacks are on sticks! I like going toRead More →

Do you think about cucumbers? Do you always have one in your fridge?  Do you buy one every week?  Do you name them? (Wait….we aren’t talking about people who really LOVE cucumbers.) I adore cucumbers especially on hot days.  There is something about the crispness and the feel of their crunch that make me feel like I am having a treat.  I can sit and crunch on them at snacktime and feel like I am getting away with something. (I don’t do many things wrong so eating a plate of cucumbers make me feel dangerous!) They have become my go-to at lunchtime because I can pairRead More →

I had an epiphany last week. I seem to have a lot of them lately. They are true lightbulb moments that I sometimes look up to see if a lightbulb just flashed over my head.  I’m wondering if epiphanies come with age or I need maybe I just need to be medicated.  (Now I’m thinking of one of those medicine commercials advertising a drug for epiphanies and wondering what kind of a face an actor would make to show that emotion.) I digress.  I usually write a birthday blog but this year, I just couldn’t.  It had nothing to do with becoming a year older (because let’sRead More →

Are you reading for some learnin’?  One of my many realizations in the past year was that I still need to make more steps forward in learning about other cuisines. I had this epiphany when watching Jeopardy and a food category came up.  I was sure I would get them all right but I didn’t….I only got one correct and it was the $200 Answer.  I was quite embarrassed with myself and so glad I wasn’t standing behind the podium.  (Because I will say that I mock those people who are in a vocation and then get the questions wrong in their vocation.) Just becauseRead More →

Hooray!  I survived Christmas….sort of.  I kind of did something this year that put a wrench in my life the last couple months….I got a puppy.  Her name is Scout and we brought her home a week before Thanksgiving when she was 9 weeks old. The big secret was that I had been courting her since she was 5 weeks.  I met a fantastic woman with beautiful dogs this summer.  I told her I “may” be interested in a puppy at some point.  Long story short, some point came a little faster than expected and I was asked if I wanted to adopt a sableRead More →

There is a ritual in NW Indiana.  It may not be limited to this area but it is definitely something I took notice of 19 years ago when I moved to the area.  I am not sure if I would consider it a good practice or something I look forward to but I know it is going to happen. It happens with a frenzied energy and it almost makes people have tunnel vision.  They can only see one thing….one goal…one purpose….getting to the grocery store before the first big snowstorm. Now this may sound a little dramatic but we live in the infamous snowbelt.  EveryRead More →

Do you have specific things that your mom said to you growing up that ring in your ears as part of your everyday life?  It can be little things like the way she said I love you or how she answered the phone.  It can be little affirmations that she would tell you all the time or even ways you were reprimanded.  (My mom is now reading this and feeling nervous as to what I’m about to say.)  On a daily basis, I get to hear my mom’s voice….part of it is because I call her all the time and the other part is thatRead More →

Tomorrow is Tuesday!!!!  Do you observe Taco Tuesday?  I write that like it is a religious holiday and to some it is one.  Simply, it is the weekly ritual of eating tacos on Tuesday.  (It would be cool if there was a little more than that like maybe doing a shred the cheese dance or a tortilla fling to the sky to thank the taco gods.) I think when the term was first coined, a fast food taco joint took credit for it and tried to own the name….and we all know Taco Tuesday can’t be owned!!! You can make your tacos at home andRead More →

When you are in a conversation and you misunderstand something, what is your reaction?  Do you just smile, nod and take a sip of your drink with the hopes that is enough to be considered part of the exchange?  Do you furrow your brow, smirk and think about other things?  Maybe you just widen your eyes, flare your nostrils and take a breath and tell them you have to go potty and then sneak into the bathroom and google it. Actually, when I’m talking in a group and something comes up that I don’t understand I think I do kind of an eye squint andRead More →
