“We go together
Like rama lama lama ka dinga da dinga dong
Remembered forever
As shoo-bop sha wadda wadda yippity boom de boom
Chang chang changitty chang sha-bop
That’s the way it should be
Wah-oooh, yeah!
We’re one of a kind
Like dip da-dip da-dip doo-wop da doo-bee doo”

Do you remember this song?  It is from the movie Grease which I love to watch every summer. I woke up humming this today as I sorted socks in the laundry.  (FYI….it is a great sock matching song!)

As I was “Boogedy boogedy boogedy boogedy shoobee doowop shebop”ing my to the bottom of the basket, I started to think of things that went together.

Peanut butter and Jelly.  Peas and Carrots.  Bacon and Eggs.  Spaghetti and Meatballs.  Steak and Potatoes.  Biscuits and Gravy.  Chicken and Waffles.  Wine and Cheese. Cake and Ice Cream.  Macaroni and Cheese.

They are like food best friends.  (Wine isn’t really a food group to me but to some of my friends…I think it is.)

I started to think about matching condiments next.  (Seriously, this is what my mind does when folding laundry…seems like I do drink…doesn’t it?)

Does ketchup always go with mustard or is it mustard and relish?  Is this a discussion to only have when hamburgers and hot dogs are being debated?  (FYI….hamburgers and hot dogs are another epic pair.)

I’m not a huge ketchup fan.  I’ll grab a packet or two when I grab some French fries when I’m out.  (Usually the packets end up staying in my car and I never use them.)

I didn’t even have a bottle in my house until recently when a friend was being a smarty pants and thought it would be fun to gift me with a 64-ounce bottle so he could “cover up my food.”  (In all honesty, this particular friend is probably my favorite person to cook for besides my husband because he loves my food so much….and he helps clean up!)

I was working in my pantry this week and was moving the 64-ounce bottle of ketchup to the back when all of a sudden I had a craving for shrimp and cocktail sauce.  (Another great pair….might I add!)

There is always some shrimp in my freezer so I had that part covered but what about the cocktail sauce?  I could make some…actually I could make a lot because essentially it is just ketchup, lemon and horseradish….right?

I had enough ketchup in the house so if I screwed up the first batch (or second or third), I could keep trying.  (But seriously….cocktail sauce is pretty easy to make.)

I grabbed the jug of ketchup (checked the expiration date because it has been in there for a while), juiced a lemon and popped open the horseradish.  It mixed up quickly and I gave it a little taste.  A dash of Worcestershire Sauce and it was perfect.

While I was mixing, I had thawed out about a dozen shrimp and chopped them up. I like to mix the chopped shrimp with the sauce and eat it with a Club Cracker….it is the best way to get more cocktail sauce coated bites.  (Plus, when I dip a full shrimp in that bright red sauce…I am guaranteed to drop a glop on my shirt.)

Wop ba-ba lu-mop and wop bam boom…It was delicious…cold, a little tart and a little zing…..mmmmm.  (I’ll only need to make it 13 more times this summer to use of all this ketchup!!!)

Hooray for things that really go together like shrimp and cocktail sauce or readers and blogs…..ha-na-na-na-na-na-na yippity dip de doom!!

Quick and Easy Cocktail Sauce

(Makes enough for about a dozen shrimp)

Ingredients

½ cup of ketchup

juice of half of a lemon

1-2 Tablespoons of horseradish (I used 2 because I like it zingy)

1 dash of Worcestershire Sauce

Directions

Stick all of the ingredients in a bowl and mix it.

Dip your shrimp or chop the shrimp up in big chunks and mix them in.

Serve with some club crackers and go watch a movie.
