There are things we all enjoy doing during our weekends in the fall.  There are those of us who like to hang out at football games and there are others who like to observe the fall colors while hiking in the woods.  There are even people who really like to rake leaves.  (I was never convinced as a child that this chore was “fun.”) But for me, a cool Fall day begs for a cooking class. If you remember I had signed up for Shaw’s Crab House’s “Sushi School” this August with my first class in sushi basics.  I, unfortunately, missed the second class onRead More →

Halloween freaks me out.  I am a huge scaredy cat and everywhere I look I am terrified.  I can’t drive down my street without seeing my neighbor’s decorations of skull heads and monsters.  I turn on the TV and there are hair-raising marathons of Friday the 13th or Nightmare on Elm Street. It will only be worse next week when as the holiday gets closer and I see costumed witches and vampires roaming the aisles of the store in search for deals on candy and gruesome treats to bring to work. This eerie feeling keeps me on the constant look out for zombies, ghosts orRead More →

I really try to think that I keep up with current events, trends and pop culture.  But in all honesty, I know I am always a little bit behind what people are talking about at the water cooler.  (Or do people just catch up holding their Nalgene bottles?) But there is one thing that I really felt the need to address because I just don’t get it.  (Okay, there are a lot of things I don’t get but let’s stay focused here.)  I am confused about “twerking.” I am sure most of you are familiar with the term but I had no clue what itRead More →

Is there something called “Cooking Contests Annonymous?”  If there is such a meeting group, I think I need to join it.  Not because I enter a lot of contests, it is because of my behavior once I am in those contests. A perfect example would be my recent experience at The Chopping Block (222 W Merchandise Mart Plaza, Chicago, IL).  They innocently held a contest on their Facebook page for their first annual Chili Cook-Off.  Contestants would submit their recipes and the readers voted on them.  The finalists were chosen either by popular vote or The Chopping Block’s Choice. I was thrilled and honored whenRead More →

Sometimes I wonder about things…odd things.  And then I wonder do other people wonder about such odd things or is this just the work of a brilliant brain?  (I choose to believe my thoughts are a sign of brilliance and not psychosis.) So I was sitting in the living room this weekend staring out the window and daydreaming.  The signs of fall such as the leaves changing color, the lack of sunlight and a feeling of cool in the air were just enough to make me want to stay cuddled up under a blanket.  (All completely normal thoughts, right?) As I was gazing out theRead More →

We all have annual events that we look forward to and even cherish.  For some, it is a holiday like Fourth of July, Thanksgiving or Arbor Day.  (I put that in for my tree huggers.)  For others, it may be a sporting event like the Super Bowl, the World Series or the Chicago Marathon. For me, the event I have looked forward to for the past 3 years is Illinois Restaurant Association and Bon Appetit’s Chicago Gourmet. I might even be bold enough to say that this 6th year of the event may have been their best! What may surprise you is the reason whyRead More →
